A prerequisite for all applicants is that they have completed Modules 1 and 2 of a COSCA-accredited Counselling Skills Course unless granted APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning - see below). While there is no specific minimum entry requirement, a good general level of education and maturity, sufficient to enable course members to deal with the emotional demands of the course, its practical requirements and theoretical learning, and to write required assignments, is necessary. At the interview stage, applicants will be invited to consider that there may be times when an applicant is faced with the indication that being in concurrent therapy is the only realistic way of entering on to, or continuing in the course. Prior study, training or supervised experience in counselling or related subjects is an advantage. It is useful, though not essential, for trainees to be in situations where they can draw on course learning in their normal occupations whether professional or voluntary.
The foregoing paragraph indicates that applicants must be at least 24 years of age at the start of the course.
Selection Procedure
Applicants who fulfil the entry requirements will be selected on the basis of a written application form together with a personal statement and professional and personal references. The interview will assess applicants' motivation and potential for using to advantage the experiential style of learning the course will employ. In the event that an applicant is not selected on to the course they will be advised in writing of this decision and when possible given advice on what steps they might take in order to reapply. There will be 12 places on the course each year.
Those who are considering applying for the Course are welcome to make further enquiries to the Course Director or Course Administrator.
