The programme is expected to begin in February 2011 and operates on a part-time basis until summer 2013.

From the start date until June 2011, it will run concurrently with Modules 3 and 4 of the Counselling Skills Course. Those who have successfully applied to enter the Diploma programme will still follow these Modules 3 and 4, but will complete additional work. Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL):

In accordance with COSCA’s recommendations, APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) will be available to those who whish to apply for the Course in Counselling Skills (or the Diploma programme). For those who wish to obtain the Counselling Skills Certificate, APL will not be available beyond the end of Module Two. Those who have completed COSCA modules in counselling skills will be eligible to join the Diploma programme at a place which takes their previous modules into account. APL is also available to persons who have not obtained COSCA modules, but who can demonstrate, with documentation, that they have completed training of an equivalent duration and standard.

In exceptional cases persons who have previously obtained COSCA’s Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent, and since then continued with further training and with supervision, may be able to obtain further APL and to join the Diploma programme in October 2011.

The pattern of course work will resemble that of the Counselling Skills Course., namely of weekly evening meetings together with several all-day Saturday events each year. In addition to the course meetings Diploma trainees will be required to fulfil certain practical requirements.
